The most approachable is Raft. For a lonely, grounded island, Stranded Deep; for horror, The Forest and Sons of the Forest; for hardcore realism, Green Hell; for story and an alien ocean, Subnautica. Our own Island Escape (March 2027) makes escaping by sea the core mechanic.
Shipwrecked on an island with nothing but your hands is one of the oldest adventure fantasies there is, and survival crafting games are the most direct way to live it. The first night is always the same: you are hungry, it is getting dark, and a pile of sticks and stones is the only thing between you and whatever lives in the trees. Twenty hours later you have a base, a workshop and a plan to get off the island.
This guide covers island survival games on PC — games like Raft and Stranded Deep — and a few close relatives set in jungles or oceans that share the same loop. For each one you get the developer, the year it first came out, what makes it worth playing and how it differs from the rest. One entry is our own upcoming game, clearly marked and not at the top.
The island survival loop
Island survival games mostly share one structure: gather → craft → build → explore → escape. What changes from game to game is which step gets the spotlight:
- Pressure. Hunger, thirst, sickness, weather and predators. Some games are punishing simulations; others are relaxed and forgiving.
- Progression. How far your technology can go — from a stone axe to engines, generators or submarines.
- Story. Some games are pure sandboxes. Others have a mystery on the island and an ending you work toward.
- Company. Many survival games are built for co-op; a few are designed as single-player experiences.
Knowing which of these you care about most is the fastest way to pick from the list below.
8 island survival games on PC
01 Raft
Developer Redbeet InteractiveFull release 2022Early access 2018
Instead of being stranded on an island, you are stranded on a few planks in the open ocean, hooking floating debris to expand your raft while a shark circles below. Over time the raft becomes a floating base with sails, an engine and a steering wheel, and a story leads you between islands and other locations.
It is the friendliest game on this list: easy to start, gentle progression, and wonderful in co-op. Watching your raft grow from four planks into a multi-deck boat is very satisfying.
Your base moves. You visit islands rather than live on one, and the ocean itself is the main resource.
02 Stranded Deep
Developer Beam Team GamesEarly access 2015
A plane crash leaves you in a life raft somewhere in the Pacific, surrounded by small tropical islands. You gather coconuts and driftwood, build shelters and rafts, dive for resources and hunt down a handful of dangerous creatures.
It feels the most like a real castaway story: small islands, a lot of empty sea, and a quiet, lonely atmosphere.
More grounded and slower than Raft, with more emphasis on island-hopping and diving.
03 The Forest
Developer Endnight GamesFull release 2018Early access 2014
After a plane crash on a forested peninsula, you search for your missing son while building a camp and defending it from a tribe of cannibal mutants. Below the island lies a network of caves that holds the story.
If you want survival with fear in it, this is a classic. Building is free-form and satisfying, and the caves are genuinely tense.
Horror is half the experience. Enemies scout, stalk and attack your base, so defence matters as much as crafting.
04 Sons of the Forest
Developer Endnight GamesFull release 2024Early access 2023
The sequel to The Forest. You are sent to a remote island to find a missing billionaire and end up fighting to survive among cannibals and worse. A bigger island, seasons, and an AI companion named Kelvin who can help gather and build.
More of what made The Forest great, with a larger world and a more flexible building system.
Companions and a bigger, more open map make it feel less claustrophobic than the original, though it is still a horror game at heart.
05 Island Escape
Developer ShengyuStudioRelease March 2027Chinese title 逃出孤岛
A single-player 3D survival crafting game. In 1907 your merchant ship goes down in a storm and you wash ashore on a nameless island. You gather, craft and build, pushing the island through four eras — stone, iron, steam and electric — with 63 items, 68 recipes and 17 buildings.
The escape is the point. At any moment you can build a boat — raft, sailboat, steamship or ironclad — load the hold and gamble on the crossing, which you sail by hand across six stretches of sea, with 12 sea events and two bosses. Sinking is not a game over: the ship and cargo are lost, but everything on the island is still yours.
It is built for one player, with a mystery to uncover — another ship wrecked on the same reef 120 years earlier left 24 pages and 8 carved steles behind. Wolves hunt at night, and firelight is safe until the rain puts it out. Four endings and a New Voyage mode. Not out yet.
06 Green Hell
Developer Creepy JarFull release 2019Early access 2018
Not an island but the Amazon rainforest — included because it is the benchmark for punishing, realistic survival. You manage nutrition, wounds, infections, parasites and your character's sanity, all while trying to find out what happened to your wife.
If you found island survival games too easy, this is the step up. Every leech and every unknown berry matters.
The jungle replaces the coastline, and the body-inspection and sanity systems are far more detailed than anything else here.
07 Subnautica
Developer Unknown Worlds EntertainmentFull release 2018Early access 2014
You crash-land in an escape pod on an ocean planet. There are no islands to speak of — almost everything happens underwater, where you scan wildlife, build habitats and submarines, and dive ever deeper to uncover what happened to the planet.
It has one of the best stories in survival games and an unforgettable sense of wonder and dread. If the sea in Raft fascinated you, this is the sea from below.
Exploration and story lead; combat is minimal. The depth of the ocean replaces the size of an island as your measure of progress.
08 ARK: Survival Evolved
Developer Studio WildcardFull release 2017Early access 2015
You wake up on an island full of dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. Survive, build, and above all tame: dinosaurs become mounts, workers and an army.
Taming is the unique hook — no other game on the list lets you ride a T. rex into battle.
It is built around online multiplayer and long-term grinding, with a much larger scope than the others. Single-player exists, but the game shines with a group.

First-night tips that work in almost all of them
- Water before food. Thirst usually drains faster than hunger. Find or make a reliable water source first.
- Build small, then move. Your first shelter is temporary. Put it near resources, not near the perfect view.
- Fire is safety. In most of these games light and warmth deter predators and keep you healthy at night.
- Tool upgrades first. A better axe or pickaxe multiplies the speed of everything else.
- Explore with a goal. Pick one landmark per trip and come back before dark.
FAQ
What is the best island survival game for beginners?
Raft is the most approachable: simple start, steady progression and a light story. Sons of the Forest is a good next step if you want more challenge and don't mind horror.
Are there single-player island survival games with a story?
Yes. Subnautica is the best-known example. Our own Island Escape (March 2027) is designed for one player, with a mystery and four endings. The Forest and Sons of the Forest also have stories and can be played solo.
Which island survival games let you actually escape the island?
Many have an ending you can reach, but escape is the central mechanic in Island Escape: you can build a ship and attempt the crossing at any time, and how far you've developed decides your odds. In Raft you never really have an island to escape from — you live on the sea.
