Island Shore

孤岛海滩
Interactive 3Dthree.js · WebGLClick to walkNo downloadFree

A desert island you can walk around in your browser. The sun is low, the surf keeps rolling in and breaking white along the sand, the palms lean with the wind, and what is left of a wooden ship lies on its side at the waterline. A castaway has a fire going by the wreck. Click anywhere on the beach and he walks there — and the crabs get out of his way.

How to play

Controls

Left click
Click a spot on the sand and he walks there, leaving footprints behind him. A ring marks where you pointed.
Right drag
Orbit the camera around the island. Nothing else is bound to the right button, so you can look around without sending him anywhere.
Left drag
Orbits too — this is what touch screens use. Dragging never sends him walking; only a clean click or tap does.
Scroll
Zoom from a gull's-eye view of the whole island down to the crabs at his feet.
The sea
He stays on dry land. Click out in the water and he walks to the edge of the surf instead of wading in.
Buttons
Pause the scene, or take it full screen. It also pauses itself when you scroll away or switch tabs.

The camera circles slowly on its own until you touch it — the first click or drag hands the controls over to you.

On the island

What's in the Scene

The island. A small round island with a wide sand beach that rises into low dunes, with clumps of beach grass and scrub on top. The sand darkens where the waves keep it wet. Two more islands sit on the horizon.

The ocean. The water is turquoise over the shallows and deep blue further out. Swells move across the open sea, waves roll in toward the beach and break into foam along the whole shoreline, and the waterline creeps up and down the sand. The low sun lays a trail of glints across the water.

Palms and wind. A dozen coconut palms lean out toward the sea. Their trunks sway, their fronds flutter, coconuts hang under the crowns and a few have dropped onto the sand.

The wreck. The broken hull of a wooden sailing ship lies on its side at the waterline — keel, bare ribs, a few planks still attached and a snapped mast. Planks, barrels and crates have washed up around it, and a green bottle lies on the beach.

The camp. A campfire in a ring of stones, with flickering firelight, rising sparks and smoke drifting downwind, a driftwood log to sit on and a lean-to roofed with a sheet of canvas. When he stands near the fire, he holds his hands out to it.

The locals. Crabs scuttle sideways across the beach and run off when he gets close. Seagulls circle overhead, flapping and gliding.

The game behind the beach

Shipwrecked in 1907

This beach is a small nod to Island Escape, our upcoming survival game, March 2027 on Steam. It is a single-player 3D survival crafting game: in 1907 your merchant ship goes down and you wash ashore on a nameless island. You gather, craft and build, push your island from the Stone age to the Electric age, and can build a boat and gamble on the open sea at any time.

Questions

FAQ

Is Island Shore free? Do I need to download anything?

It is free and runs right in this page. There is nothing to download or install, no sign-up and no ads.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, in any modern mobile browser with WebGL 2. Tap the sand to walk, drag with one finger to turn the camera and pinch to zoom. On touch devices the scene renders a little lighter so it stays smooth.

Why won't he walk into the sea?

He is a castaway, not a swimmer. Click the water and he walks to the edge of the surf and stops there. He also steps around the wreck, the campfire, the rocks and the palm trunks.

What is the scene made with?

three.js on WebGL 2. Everything is generated in code when the page loads: the island, the ocean and its foam, the palms, the wreck, the crabs and the gulls. The page loads no 3D models and no image textures.

Is this a demo of Island Escape?

No. Island Shore is a small browser toy that shares its setting with Island Escape, our upcoming single-player 3D survival crafting game about being shipwrecked in 1907. Island Escape launches on Steam for Windows PC in March 2027 and can be wishlisted now.

Will it slow my computer down?

It is built to run smoothly on an ordinary laptop. It also pauses itself when you scroll it out of view or switch tabs, and the Pause button stops it completely.
